When you think about the different decorating methods that can be used to imprint a company’s logo to a garment, screen-printing and embroidery are probably the first two methods that come to mind. As these two methods are very popular and very effective when it comes to placing images on garments, there are other imprint methods that take these two techniques to the next level. These methods are sublimation and appliqué.
Sublimation
Sublimation is a process where images are transferred from heat-resistant transfer paper to a polyester or acrylic surface. Under high temperatures and high pressure, the heat-sensitive ink placed on the transfer paper turns into a gas, permeates the fabric and solidifies into the fibers of the fabric. This process makes for a more permanent design that will not wash off. Another benefit to using sublimation is that you can create an allover design for your shirt.
Appliqué
Similar to a patch that is added to an old pair of ripped jeans, appliqué is a piece of fabric or material with glue or a pressure-sensitive backing that is attached to a garment. To make sure appliqué is secured onto a garment, it is usually sewn on with either a zigzag or satin stitch. If you are looking to create depth to your t-shirt, this would be the perfect decorating technique for you.
Sublimation and appliqué are two unique decorating techniques that can be used to create a fresh and creative type of look. If you are feeling really creative both of these techniques also work well when combined with each other, or with other decorating techniques. For example, add appliqué to a sublimated, embroidered or screen-printed garments to add more depth. Or, add screen-printing or embroidery to a sublimated shirt to add more flair.
