Given the circumstances that are affecting our world, today, many people are now working from home. Working from home may have seemed like the “dream” to some people. Now that it’s happened, remote life might not be what it’s cracked up to be.
Why? Because at home, there are different distractions that the office doesn’t have. There are dishes in the sink, you’re thinking about the last time you cleaned, you need to get organized. The kids (who are also staying home) need to be entertained. The list goes on.
If this sounds like something you’re currently struggling with, here are some tips to do it more effectively.
Have a Dedicated Work Space
First and foremost, having a dedicated work space will help tremendously. If you don’t have a dedicated work space, create one! As long as it’s a place where you say “this is where I’m working”, it can help.
Having a space to call your work space will allow you to focus only on the work tasks you have and nothing else. Then, when work is over, you can leave that space alone and tackle your home responsibilities.
Maintain Regular Hours to Manage Time
Managing your time well will help you manage your day to day better. Keep your work times consistent with what you’re used to. This will help you feel that there is some normalcy to your day. All you need to do is get to your dedicated work space by the time you start work.
Create a Morning Routine
Without driving times to work, you have a little extra time on your hands than you’re used to. Creating a morning routine will help you kick stat your day. A few things to work into that extra time can be to read ten pages in a book, exercise, meditate and eat a healthy breakfast. Another great thing to do is to set three main goals you want to accomplish by the end of the day to keep you on task. Plus you will have that great feeling of accomplishment once you’re finished crushing your goals.
Create a routine that keeps you be productive instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media. Which, it’s also important to not look at your phone for at least one hour after you wake up. A good tip is to look outside your window when you first wake up, instead of your phone.
Get Dressed and Ready for the Day
Even though you may not plan to go anywhere, still get dressed and ready for the day. Sure it’s fun to lounge around in your pajamas all day, but after a while, it will start to bring you down. Getting ready gets you ready for that normalcy that you will be craving once you’ve been working from home for way too long.
Stay in Communication with People
Working from home can start to look and feel like isolation. Even if you have family at home, you might miss the daily office chatter that happens regularly. Ensuring that you are in regular communication with the “outside” world helps. Using video chat services like Zoom, or Skype can help you see those you are talking to. Not just have a phone conversation. A pro tip is to schedule a weekly call with one of these services with everyone on your team so you can still talk to other people in the world.
