Pens are one of the most common promotional items companies add their logo to. Does that mean you have to go out and buy a bunch of pens with your logo on it? Not necessarily. Sometimes, the most common item is not always the best item. In order for your pen investment to work for you, I always tell my clients to give away a pen your clients like using – the pen that fits well in their hands, has a good weight to it and writes well. Not the flimsy plastic pen that may fall apart in your clients hands or run out of ink after the first week of receiving it.
There are 100’s of 1000’s of pens out there and narrowing it down to 1 may seem hard to do. That is why we decided to walk you through the process of selecting your next promotional pen.
Material
The most popular material for pens is either be plastic or metal. Some people think they need to purchase a metal pen in order to get a good quality pen. This is false. Not all plastic pens are flimsy – there are better quality quality plastic pens out there that are made of a thicker plastic that will not give you the sense they will fall apart when using them. Some examples of these are ABS plastic, PVC plastic, Silicone, etc.
If you are looking for a metal pen but are afraid that all metal pens come with a $4 price point, no worries. You can get good quality metal pens that do not come with the high price point. Metal pens can mean they are stainless steel, aluminum, brass, steel, etc.
If you are looking for a different feel, you may want to look into some of the more unique materials that are sometimes used for pens. These unique materials include, wood, leather, foam, fleece, corn plastic and recycled cardboard to name a few.
Action
Next, you should think of how you want the pen to function? Do you want a cap on the pen? Or would you prefer it to click or twist? Whichever action you would like the pen to perform, this will help you narrow down your results.
Size, Shape and Feel
You will also have to take into account the width of the pen. Some people like a slim pen and some people like a fat pen. Going beyond the width of the pen, think about whether you are looking for a straight pen or a pen with some curvature. Taking this a little bit further, maybe you are looking for a custom shape pen (like an airplane) or a more unique pen that has a smiley face on the click part.
Another question to to think about is whether you prefer to have a grip on your pen or not. A grip on a pen is a rubbery or foam cover on a pen that is placed on the part where you hold it. Grips can change the feel of the pen. Some people like having a grip and some people do not.
Multi-Function
Do you want a pen that can perform multiple functions? Some pens do more than just write. Some examples of multi-function pens are pens with a usb, highlighter, stylus tip, sitcky flags, flashlights, laser pointers, screen cleaners and more attached.
Hopefully, this blog will give you some insights as to the components and add-ons that come along with choosing a pen, so the next time you select your promotional pen, you will know what to expect.
